“Your Monster” REVIEW

It’s the classic beauty and the beast tale combined with the childhood story about fearing the monster in the closet. When Laura Franco has her heart broken by her theatrical director boyfriend and her chance of starring on broadway is taken away by his “new” girlfriend, Laura can’t stand it. Standing in the background, she eventually finds comfort in a monster that mysteriously lives in her closet. Though his love and encouragement, she must find the monster inside to be able to get revenge over the one who threw her away.

Your Monster stars Abigail’s Melissa Berrera and Saturday Night‘s Tommy Dewey in a comedy, romance musical with a bit of horror thrown in for fun. All in all, it’s a film, that creates a fantasy of what might be when all hope seems lost and Berrera does an exceptional job of using that fantasy to help her essentially move on and be stronger than she has ever been.

Additionally the film stars, Civil War’s Edmund Donovan as the theatrical director who ultimately broke Laura’s heart and moves on as if nothing has happened. Ultimately he is the prime example of the person we all love to hate as he excels in that role even when he plays with Laura’s emotions in one brief scene that will leave audiences wanting to yell through the screen ‘how could you’.

All in all, Your Monster is a refreshing film with a musical element that will have true theater lovers excited to see that the theater is not dead. All the actors as a whole do an exceptional job of creating a unique film that will have audiences, laughing and crying and on the edge of their seats. It’s not so much a horror as it is a comedy romance musical.

Your Monster came out in theaters October 25 and is currently playing in one near you.
