Created by Hasbro in 2001, the Uglydolls are making their theatrical debut on the big screen in the latest story about the importance of acceptance in a imperfect world.
Stx films Uglydolls stars a musical cast including Kelly Clarkson as the spunky, positive natured Moxy who’s dream is to have the one special child to make happy. Together with her team of misfits she attempts the possible of climbing out of the town of Uglyville into the Institute of Perfection, lead by hot shot Lou voiced by (Nick Jonas) who only seeks “perfection” from the dolls. But is it enough to want to try something new or should they be content with their Ugliness.
Aside from Clarkson and Jonas, the film also stars the voices of Janelle Monae, Blake Shelton, Gabriel Iglesias, Ice-T and Pitbull and the songs are instant hits that will by far stick in ones head long after the closing credits. Original and yet very much catchy even to an older audience, there’s something for all ages to get from the brightly colored characters singing on the big screen. Of course with a wide range of musical talents also allows for a wide range of different types of music ranging from pop to even a few hip hop numbers by Pitbull himself.
At an hour 25 minute runtime, Uglydolls adequately displays a positive image to kids which further promotes the importance of recognizing different doesn’t have to be bad and in fact it is differences that makes them special. The storyline is appealing to both kids and adults in that both will get a slightly different take out of what’s happening on the screen. That being said, the ultimate message of acceptance and what it truly takes to be the perfect doll. The answer might surprise and more often then not will leave one in a flood of emotions when the ultimate question is answered as to whether or not Moxy does get her child in the end.
