“The Tiger Rising” Review

Based on the book by Kate DiCamillo, comes a story of overcoming sadness and anger in order to set a tiger free. Told through the eyes of a young girl who witnesses the imagination and artistry of a young boy, the movie is not as predictable as one might expect. The film captures the beauty of a rural Florida town through the eyes of a child.

The film stars Dennis Quaid, Queen Latifah and Sam Trammell who all come together along with newcomers, Christian Convery (Playing With Fire) and classmate Madelen Mills (Jingle- Jangle) as they all play a crucial role both in each others lives as well as the freedom of the tiger.

Quaid specifically does an exceptional job (taking after his role in Intruder) as he plays the boss that just wants his own way no matter the cost. One can see the same passion that he used in The Intruder mirrored in this role as he interacts with the others and ultimately has the audience wanting to hate him.

Similarly Queen Latifah plays that of a mothering role as she leads the kids on a journey of self discovery. She helps both find their way out of both sadness and anger that is reflected in the bold decision to release the tiger. She certainly has that strong knack especially coming from her role in the hit musical Hairspray where she lead the young teens to fight back against segregation.

All in all the film is a good feel good film. The only word of warning would be regarding the ending might be a little controversial especially for any animal rights advocates. That aside the message behind the tragedy shines through as everyone involved learns an important lesson in letting one another help.

The Tiger Rising came out in theaters January 21 2022 and if one is luck one might be able to catch it at a limited theater near you.
