It’s Jaws re-imagined in the latest summer blockbuster that has movie goers wondering if it is indeed safe to go into the water.
Ultimately, there is very little originality as true Jaws fans, will instantly see easter eggs from the original film in The Meg, aside from the fact that this film is set in Singapore, with a predominantly Asian cast. Even down to some of the scenes, one might find themselves asking are they just watching a larger version of the “man-eating” Shark. That aside, the film is entertaining partly due to the cast themselves.
The film stars Jason Stanham as the explorer who is indeed one of the only survivors who can stand up to the prehistoric monster and save everyone from its destruction and he does so with such ease that has one wondering, “Is he even human”?
The chemistry between Stanham and his costar, Bingbing Li is one of a tradition as Stanham always seems to find himself cast next to a woman who ends up proving to be his ally as well as potential love interest. Li matches up as a woman more obsessed with finding the monster and protecting her daughter, however through the subtle persuasion of her young daughter, the love interest emerges as they attempt to stop the monster.
The film also includes special effects that compared to Jaws, did do justice as one could clearly see that the film makers shouldn’t of had nearly the same problems with the megadon as Spielberg had with the mechanical shark. Everything was captured perfectly and very appealing to the eye from the start of the film to the stunning conclusion.
The Meg came out in theaters, August 10 is is still playing in one near you.
