“The Last Showgirl” REVIEW

Baywatch’s Pamela Anderson is now the LAST Showgirl.

When the Razzle Dazzle show on the Vegas strip is canceled after a 30 year fun, Shelley and her friends are forced to figure out what to do next. Of course, unlike her younger friends, Shelley is also faced with another dilemma, that of time. Now she can either strive to find another venue to dance or except the inevitable future like her older friend who now waits tables at a bar. The choice is ultimately hers, or is it?

The Last Showgirl, which ultimately has earned 2 Golden Globe nominations including Anderson for best Leading actress and Miley Cyrus’ original song, “Beautiful That Way“, is a culmination of Anderson’s career. It is certainly a role made for her as she as had a long life in the limelight from her early years on Baywatch to her not so proper days as a “Playboy bunny”. It’s ultimately a story that all women go through as they age and ultimately age out of certain roles as they are faced with questions of what to do next with their lives.

Additionally the film stars Disney Suite life‘s Brenda Song, Red One‘s Kiernan Shipka, and Borderland’s Jamie Lee Curtis, as they all co star nest to Anderson and make up their own wierd quirky family as Shelly is going through what one might call a bit of a mid life crisis. Finally Guardian’s Dave Bautista rounds out the cast as stage manager/”friend” to Shelly who we find out is much more than that as the film reaches its climax.

All in All, The Last Showgirl touches on crucial moments that women young and older inevitably face as they are trying to make it on the stage. That being said, there is a bit of nudity, given the type of show the Razzle Dazzle is, as well as strong language throughout. However these two elements are only part of the film and the director does a good job of letting the story be told while not overly saturated by nudity and language.

The Last Showgirl expanded its showing in theaters on January 8th, and is currently showing in one near you.
