“The Critic” REVIEW

I grew up reading you. I wanted to act because of you. I so wanted to meet your standards, but you think I’m appalling.

There is art in you, Miss Land. My disappointment is in your failure to access it.

This is the stereotype that so many theatrical critics in the 20th century and even now, go through just for being brutally honest with their opinions and the latest film, The Critic captures this on the big screen. The film stars Lord of the Rings’ Ian McKellen in a powerful role that will have you gripping the seat and rooting for the man behind the words. All in all, McKellan’s performance is excels in his portrayal especially given the time period. He definitely has that distinguished feel that makes critics what they are today, including facing the changing newspaper and feeling the backlash of trying to “make actors happy”.

The film also stars The King’s Man’s Gemma Arterton as the one lead actress who as the quotes highlights loved the reading until she became the actor. Arterton equally captures the period quite well as we envision what ultimately all actors which they could do to critics who they think are too harsh.

Another part of the film that is a surprise is when a night at the theater turns into something more of a murder mystery. That backlash sets certain things into motion in a way where no one quite knows what will happen next. Ultimately, The Critic, which came out in theaters September 13, is a roller coaster of emotions. It has everything one hopes to have in a suspense thriller, including murder, and fidelity which will have audiences clinging to their seats with intrigue.

The Critic is currently playing in a theater near you.
