“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” REVIEW

New Generation connects with the old in the latest Ghostbusters sequel.  Egon’s family, carrying on the legacy, find themselves confronted with similar challenges that the original Ghostbusters found themselves struggling with, including politics.  Everything is put aside like the original when a massive threat, challenges the world.  It’s time for everyone to put on the gear one more time and ban together to defeat the evil and save the world.

At an hour, 55 minute runtime, Ghostbusters brings new with the old as there is much more nostalgic moments that fans of the original will remanence over.  The film stars Gifted star, McKenna Grace as young Phoebe, the grand daughter of the late great Egon, who clearly carries the same science loving torch as her grandfather.  Grace certainly carries herself well especially along side legends including Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts.  Growth in her character definitely makes for a rather intriguing story.

Additionally the film stars Paul Rudd as the teacher who is slowly learning the boundaries when dealing with kids in the ghost fighting business.  We also see character growth as Rudd goes from buddy to more of a paternal figure.  There is also a bit of a budding romance between Rudd and Infinity War‘s Carrie Coon, who also is seen encouraging a more paternal role for Rudd.  While no major romance, it’ll be interesting to see how those characters play out in future films

“Dune 2” Review

Journey back to Arrakis and follow the journey with Paul as he tries to avoid the inevitable future that he is destined.  In Dune 2, we see alot of character development including in Paul Attreides as he goes from a man trying to avenge his family, but learning the way of the ferman to suddenly embracing the inevitable fate of leading the very same people who tried to kill him.  Timothy Chalemet, reprising his role, does a fabulous job of showing this deep character development while facing  clear love triangle over the girl of his dreams and that of duty to Arrakis.

Similarly Zendaya returns as Chani, as she too is faced with challenges as she must decide whether or not to completely trust Paul and give him her heart or follow her own and not turn her back on her people.    It’s a choice that heightens as she realizes Paul’s change that leads him to a inevitable fate as he agrees to take the hand of Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh).

Finally Rebecca Ferguson also returns as Paul’s mother, who also has much to consider.  Being with child, she makes a decision against death to drink the ultimate poison, transforming her into reverend mother to which she discovers truths not only about herself but also about the family she loves deeply.

All in all, Dune 2 continues the story of the house Attreides and will lead audiences on a desert adventure that will have one on the edge of their seats.  Expanding on the original, Dune 2 is nothing short of exceptional.  It’s Star Wars meets Interstellar, with slight nods to stormtroopers in clearly futuristic times.  It will hold you from the from moment on.

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” Review

Eli Mills: [to Claire] The island is dying. The dinosaurs must be preserved. We thought you could help.

The park is gone, but now the question is whether to save the last of the dinosaurs or not.  The sequel takes place three years after the original left off, as Isla Nublar is being threatened by a destructive volcano where only the strong willed dinosaurs are left, but not for long.  One of those is of course, Blue, the last of the raptors.

As part of a secret operative, special agents try to round up the dinosaurs with special interest in “Blue”, but they need help.   The ones who know the park and the dinosaurs better.  That’s where Claire and Owen come into play, though both are unaware of the real reason for rescuing the dinosaurs.  In a comical turn of events, both are enlisted to go to the burning island, unaware of exactly what they will find.

At two hour eight minute run time, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom contains the same thrill as the original Jurassic franchise with a dark twist, that of total destruction.  Ultimately the whole cast does an exceptional job portraying their roles, especially Chris Pratt (Owen) who fully captures the humorous moments that he is known for and the chemistry between himself and Bryce Dallas Howard (Claire) only grows in an even more intense way as they realize that they truly are the parents of the “world” that must be saved.  The other question, who do they really need saving from and what is the real answer to their survival.

One scene stealer is that of the little girl, Maisie who shares a special connection to that of the dinosaurs, though one doesn’t know exactly what it is until the end, the expression on the actress, Isabella Sermon is exceptional.  One can definitely see why she was cast to play the “daughter” of the original little girl from the first Jurassic Park film.  In many ways, her addition to the film, brings the Jurassic Park franchise full circle with the picture in the mansion that paid homage to the original founder the park, the late Richard Attenborough (Hammond) to that of the little girl, Lex who attempted to save the dinosaurs with her brother in the first film.  As this is Sermon’s first debut film she is starring in, one can definitely keep an eye to see if she branches out to any more films.  She’s got a knack for not only expression but portraying sympathy in more ways then one.

The film captures the same emotion as all the Jurassic Films including adventure, suspense, humor and of course one can not leave out a little romance that Pratt is known for.  It’s the perfect addition to anyone’s summer movie must see list. Don’t believe me though, one must see it for themselves to make their own educated decision. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came out in theaters June 22, 2018 and is currently playing in a theater near you.
