CicLAvia came to the Valley on Sunday March 6th 2016, and allowed participants to be free to walk or bike through the streets without fear of sharing the road with cars. Started over 5 years ago on Oct. 10th 2010, as a project to transform LA from a car only landscape to one where people can actually commune with one another while getting the exercise, the event has revolutionized Southern California in a way that businesses, as shown below, are actually stepping out to interact with people in a way that cannot be done in a car.
The path for CicLAvia- the Valley was four miles- one way starting at San Fernando Blvd on Van Nuys and traveling through Pacoima, Arleta and finally ending in Panorama City on Roscoe Blvd.
March 6th 2016, Van Nuys Blvd in Pacoima closed to offer seven hours of car free recreation.
Participants were instructed at specific intersections as Laurel Canyon and Van Nuys to follow traffic lights to allow cars to have limited use to cross.
Businesses like this dental office handed out free advertisement.
Hundreds of bikes traveled past the Pacoima Public Library toward their destination of San Fernando road.
And even participants in wheel chairs were granted access.
As well as skate boards…
And kids on scooters…
All were made to obey and stay on the right side of the street.
The only car allowed was of course this one…
Ciclavia encouraged kids like this one to be able to safely ride on the streets of the Valley
And mothers with strollers pushed their young ones down the streets of Pacioma.
Even the four legged friends came out to support and run with their masters.
And live music, entertained throughout the city.
Artists in Pacoima, opted to make the city beautiful and remind passerbyers of the importance of being active in the community.
At the end of the car free zone at San Fernando Road, participants could snap a photo and visit other unique booths to commemorate the day.
Volunteers have brought CicLAvia to cities throughout the LA area, including The Valley, Culver City, Venice, Mar Vista, Wilshire Blvd, MacArthur Park, South LA, Echo Park, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Boyle Heights, East LA and Pasadena.
The Next CicLAvia event is scheduled for May 15, 2016 in The Southeast Cities.
