“What we do in life, we do in Eternity”
16 years after Maximus gave his life for the safety of Rome, unfortunately things have not changed. Lucius, the queen’s son is now in hiding for his safety, under a new name. However, the ploy to keep him safe takes an unfortunate turn as he, like Maximus, finds himself in war and ultimately becomes a prisoner of war turned gladiator. Now as the truth comes out, Lucius must use that knowledge to free Rome once and for all and avenge the dream of his grandfather all those years ago.
All in all, Gladiator 2 is an action-packed adventure as it brings history alive once again. Connie Nielson returns as Lucilla, Lucius’ mother and one of the only ones in power still trying to hold on to the dream. Additionally, Equalizer’s Denzel Washington joins as the second in command to the new Roman leadership and brings that same charm to a powerful role. Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, in an older version. Mescal definitely harnesses some of that Russell Crowe charm, as he takes on virtually the whole Roman Army.
All in all, Gladiator 2 shouldn’t disappoint. Even with the slight difference as the story claims that Maximus is Lucius’ father, which from the original we know is not true. That being said, one can see why they chose to go that route. They didn’t ignore the truth, but it was to bring light to the fact that Maximus’ vision aligned more with the Emperor’s then his own son. When you bring that to the mix, it can be understood.
Gladiator 2 came out in theaters November 22 and is currently playing in a one near you.
