“Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken” REVIEW

Awkward teen Ruby has never quite fit in at her high school, but that’s ok. She found a squad of friends who love her for who she is, even if she can’t go near the water. When the prom comes up, she is struck with a sense of guilt, but is she willing to go against her mother’s wishes just to fit in and go with a boy.

Dreamworks latest film, “Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken” explores many of the things normal teenagers face when dealing with high school while introducing a new “princess” to the Dreamworks family. That princess is a kraken as the company is known for creating untraditional princesses and showing that there is beauty in the unknown.

Additionally, the film also twists the tale a bit as portraying the mythical kraken as the protagonist and the lovable mermaid as the wicked antagonist, which is not all that far fetched looking at the story of sirens.

The film also stars a few know voice actors including 80 for Brady‘s Jane Fonda as Grandmama, Lana Condor as Ruby and Toni Collette as Ruby’s mother, Agatha. All three strong actresses add to the strength that is needed as we see a generational pull that holds everything together in the end.

All in all, Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken is a movie for all ages. It’s beautiful artistry and clever story line will leave audiences laughing and cheering the awkward teenage moments that we all will remember. The film came out in theaters June 30th and is currently playing in one near you.
