John Krasinski has outdone himself in the latest sequel that will have everyone silent with fear. Quiet Place 2 continues the story of the Abbott family after Lee Abbott (Krasinski) is taken by the monster. Now it is up to his wife and children as they finally discover the one weakness that Lee was trying to figure out in the monster that hunts by sound. Through a cochlear hearing device of his daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds), they discover the feedback of the receiver is enough to distract the monster enough to destroy it. Now the question is how to make the sound loud enough to finish the creatures once and for all.
The sequel includes the same cast including Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott as she gives new definition to the term silence is golden. The chemistry she has with her two children and infant baby shows the feminine power that moves a single mother to do unexplainable things all in the name of protecting her family.
Additionally, in the second film, we see major character growth as the eldest daughter Regan proves that just because she is deaf, it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have the power to save her family when she discovers through her brother’s headphones that there is a song playing. That song, she determines is a message to let those still alive know there is hope “Beyond The Sea”. Similarly the actress playing Regan (Simmonds) does an exceptional job as she herself is deaf but that only adds to the power and emotion as it makes the character that much more believable and entertaining to watch.
All in All, the Quiet Place franchise is truly a play on the iconic Hitchcock era, combined with elements of Jaws and Aliens. Krasinski uses many of the same techniques including heart pounding music that heightens as something is about to happen. The film does a great job of highlighting the deaf culture and the fact that the young actress herself is deaf, it eloquently portrays the fact that just because one is deaf, it doesn’t mean they can’t be a hero. In fact it was Regan’s deafness that was a gift to the family when everyone else was screaming, the family knew how to stay silent in order to stay alive.
Quiet Place 2 came out in theaters May 28, 2021 after Covid-19 delayed the blockbuster from opening last year. It is still playing in select theaters and is definitely not one you should miss. It has everything that makes a great horror suspense thriller as awesome as any summer blockbuster should be.
