“Origin” REVIEW

“It’s More Than Racism, It’s Caste.”

Based on the book by Isabel Wilkerson, Origin follows the story of writing just a powerful, influential book. The book centers around a years long investigation where Wilkerson goes across the world interviewing various people about caste in their areas all in an effort to understand what people of color go through in America. From the Trayvon Martin case, to Hitler and finally a look into India’s interesting caste system, the movie does an exceptional job of bringing Wilkerson’s words to life and invoking emotion and outrage on the big screen.

The film, stars King Richard‘s Aunjanue Ellis- Taylor in what is sure to be one of her greatest roles yet. The emotion and dedication that she acts out while portraying the writer who sought to uncover the truth, is exceptionally. It’s no wonder she is no she has been nominated for so many awards including for Gotham Awards for her best outstanding lead performance. It’ll be interesting when the oscars are announced, will she be in the running. Only time will tell.

Additionally, the film also stars exceptional actors including Rookie Fed’s Niecy Nash, as well as King Richard’s Jon Bernthal, tv star Emily Yancy, and Hamilton’s Jasmine Cephas Jones. All of which gave the performance of the year and ought to at least get a nod from the Oscars. Once again, only time will tell as the nominations will be announced Tuesday Jan 23.

At 2 hour 15 minute runtime, Origin came out in theaters in September with a worldwide release January 19, 2024. It’s a film with just as powerful a message as Sound of Freedom. In fact it even encourages paying it forward at the end with a special QR Code. It’s definitely worth seeing in a theater near you. It will have you longing for the story and seeing all the Ms. Wilkerson had to endure just for a glimpse of the truth.
