The four turtle brothers are back, this time in animated format for audiences to relive just how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came to be.
Going back to the original storyline, this new film follows straight from that as the turtles are a science experiment gone wrong. When the doctor is taken away, the turtles find themselves deep in the sewer, rescued by a surrogate father figure, a rat names Shredder. To protect them, Shredder encourages the young turtles to stay hidden, that is until teen years when they start venturing out for more human contact. There they find out they are not the only mutants but what they soon realize is the other mutants are even more deadly they they could imagine. Now it’s a race to protect all humanity from the mutants that seek to distroy it.
All in all, Mutant Mayhem does try its best to make this new film its own. The cast helps a bit in this as all the voice actors bring their own unique take to the film franchise, more than a few decades old. Voices include, legendary Jackie Chan as Splinter as well as Grey’s Anatomy’s Micah Abbey as Donatello, Walking Dead’s Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, relative newcomer, Shamon Brown Jr as Michaelangelo and Mighty Ducks: Game Changer‘s Brady Noon as Rafael.
The film does carry a somewhat intriguing story line, though one who knows the story, might find a lot of similarities to the original. It is done in a very unique form of animation, similiar to what one would see in the latest Spiderman: Across the universe. It’s a type of animation that one has to get used to. It’s not bad, it’s just different and one that more and more animated films are going for.
At just about an hour 40 minute run time it will have audiences captivated, especially those who know very little about the animated TMNT films. The film came out in theaters August 3 and is currently playing in one near you.
