“Miller’s Girl” REVIEW

It’s the tragic tale of how close is to close as teacher-student relationship take an awkward turn for the worse. When Cairo, a lonely girl stuck at home while her parents are overseas, she turns to the only thing she is truly good at: that is writing and a literature teacher who also is found to be in a loveless marriage, takes a fancy to the young writer. Will the two be able to maintain equal boundaries or does danger lurk in the shadows?

At just an hour and a half run time, Miller’s Girl stars Scream’s Jenna Ortega as she pulls out every since of suspense and intrigue to lure a man nearly twice her age. All in all, she has a real knack in capturing that level of maturity, while holding on the the ‘not so innocent’ nature. She also carries her own since of luring sexuality when talking to both teacher and best friend alike.

Similarly the film also stars The Hobbit‘s Martin Freeman, who like Ortega, carries his sensible “Hobbitness” to the screen. He is very careful with his affections even while living in his seemingly loveless life, but that quickly changes as he reads the inspirational sexual content that Ortega’s character writes for a midterm assignment. Though we don’t see the acts, we definitely can feel the passion in the writing and expressions on the characters faces.

That being said, the film is rated R, in large part due to the increased adult language, drug references and sexual innuendoes. That being said, it is strongly advised against showing to a younger or naïve audience. Though it is a powerful story about the apparent boundaries that our teachers must put up for themselves to protect against any temptation.

Miller’s Girl came out in theaters January 25 and is currently playing in limited theaters near you.
