“Midway” Review

The battle ready film based on the after effect retaliation of the US following the attack of Pearl Harbor has movie goers flooding the theaters as Midway which came out Veteran’s day weekend sweeps the box office with number one over the three day weekend.

Midway, is an action packed remake from the original 1976 version that starred Charlton Heston and Henry Fonda. In the new version, the film takes a more story telling approach as it is told from the perspective of the veteran’s themselves who bravely fought for our country.

Midway stars Woody Harrelson as the Admiral Chester Nimitz (previously played by Henry Fonda) and Harrison perfectly portrays that of the stress that the Admiral went through as he dealt with the results of his team in the Pacific who took down the Japanese ending WWII.

Dennis Quaid plays Halsey as he is put in charge of the fleet in the Pacific and carries himself as any Captain would. He uses the same facial expressions as he did in his previous film where he played the “Intruder” in the summer blockbuster. His expressions showed the same emotion of intensity when trying to control the subject and help his fleet win.

Two other actors who made the film is Ed Skrein who played Richard “Dick” Best and Luke Evans who played Wade McClusky and both characters make this remake heartfelt and powerful none the less. It stands apart from its predecessor which one could see dealt more with the war itself rather than the people involved and it makes the audience want to know what the soldiers went through in order to get into the heart of our veterans.

The film did have a lot of effects including exceptional CGI and map painting for the war scenes that kept the audience on the edge of their seats from the first moment on. Comparable to 2001’s Pearl Harbor, but with a few exceptions including lack of a romance. Midway definitely held it’s own as being more historically driven in capturing the true stories rather than perceived.

So far Midway has grossed 21 thousand domestically at the box office, just in its opening weekend, coming out November 8, 2019 and is currently playing in a theater near you.
