Nearly 20 years later, the latest adaptation of Tina Fey‘s teen drama, Mean Girls is bringing audiences back for one more insult. This time Tina Fey takes a bold new approach by adding music to the drama, which definitely enhances the storyline. The storyline is still the same, a homeschooled teen who suddenly goes to a public high school and finds herself trying to fit in with the hottest teens. That being said, the film does a good job of adding it with fun musical selections and even a bit more of African footage to show more of the journey.
The film stars a few familiar faces including Spiderman‘s Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, the girl like before who just wants to fit in and be liked. Rice does a good job of stepping into the role that once was played by Lindsay Lohan and in fact there even is a bit of “passing the torch” so to speak with a surprise cameo by Ms. Lohan herself. Additionally, stars a relative new to the screen, musical star Renee Rapp as Regina as well as Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho, Avantika, and Bebe Wood as Regina’s “plastics”.
All in all, Mean Girls brings audiences back to high school as we are reminded of all the “cliches” that we either love or hate. Overall the film will have you laughing, crying and remincsing all the way through.
At an hour and 45 minute runtime, Mean Girls is currently playing in a theater near you as well as the original 2004 version currently streaming only on paramount plus.
