Maverick is back for an all new mission, this time under the influence of “Iceman” who has requested him to train the new recruits in the Top Gun mission. There’s one problem and that is he is still haunted by the death of former pilot and friend, Goose every time he sees Goose’s son. What’s more, Goose’s son is also harboring a grudge after finding out Maverick delayed Naval Academy by pulling the papers out of the system for two years. Now the two must face each as they are put in enemies harm on a top secret mission to target the enemy.
Nearly 34 years after the original Top Gun made its debut, Maverick is bringing the same Naval/Air Force flying to the big screen for an all new audience to marvel at what makes such a proud team of heroes. The film brings back Tom Cruise reprising his role of Maverick as well as Val Kilmer as Ice as they welcome a new cast of recruits including Divergent’s Miles Teller as Goose’s son, Rooster. Truth being told, one can definitely see why Teller was put in this role as he definitely lets his Dauntless pride show through in a way that meshes well with the entire cast.
Similarly, the film also stars Jennifer Connolly as it would not be a Tom Cruise movie without a little steamy chemistry between himself and a ex love rekindled. Though not nearly as steamy as the original Top Gun film with Kelly McGillis, the chemistry between Connolly and Cruise is actually more on the subtle side as if Cruise has matured a bit in his flirtatious nature.
Top Gun: Maverick contains several know flight patterns portrayed by real squadron fighter planes and combines that with a bit of flashes from the original that fans will find comfort in seeing again with a whole new perspective. And the music, iconic as it is, captures the move, feel and impact to keep audiences truly invested in the new story line.
The film came out in theaters Memorial Day weekend and is a fitting tribute to those who either have or are still serving in the armed forces. It’s currently playing in a theater near you.
