The number one question on everyone’s mind is ‘Who is Gabriel?’. It’s the question that has people racing to the box office the second weekend in September.
Director James Wan leaves everyone in suspense. Random killings, which Maddie witnesses from the safety of her own room, end up leading the cops to wonder just how she is connected. It ultimately starts with her abusive husband after throwing her up against the wall in a fit of rage over their previous miscarriages.
The term parasitic twin is brought up as Wan uses a real life, rare medical condition and creates the monster inside. Ultimately, Wan does a great job with subtle hints including the blood on the back of her neck as well as her visions of what is happening when “Gabriel” takes control.
Similarly, Annabelle Wallis, who played the dominant twin, Madison, ultimately does an exceptional role of portraying both sides especially when confronted with each other.
All in all, at an hour fifty one minute run time, Malignant is the perfect addition for any true horror fan with a little story to go with it. Behind all the blood and gore, there is a reason, though in Wan’s twisted writing he takes a practical yet rare medical condition and creates a new age monster that will have you up all night with fright. The special effects used will leave you scared beyond belief as the ending is not at all what one might predict for horror films.
That being said, the film is rated “R” and shouldn’t be taken lightly but if one can stomach blood and gore, Malignant is the film for you. It came out in theaters September 10 and is currently playing in one near you.
