“Maleficent 2” Review

Three truly powerful women make up the remarkable cast of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The film picks up shortly after the first one leaves off with Queen Aurora of the Moors reigning over peacefully while the humans in their destructive nature try to destroy every ounce of goodness for their own evil ways by way of Queen Ingrid.

Meanwhile Maleficent is caught up in the middle, while her heart has been changed by the love of a human child, her protective nature and the fact that the humans have twisted the previous story to make her out to be the bad guy, she starts to lash out when threatened once again. And things get even more complicated when Prince Philip (Queen Ingrid’s son) proposes to Queen Aurora in an attempt to unify both lands with their love, but will it be enough to fight the evil within as one is surprised to find out which is the evilest in the land and who is just misunderstood?

At roughly 2 hour run time, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continues the Sleeping Beauty legend as creators tell what happens after Aurora wakes up. Angelina Jolie once again exceptionally portrays Maleficent as she tries to really be good even when she fears she is about to lose her daughter forever. It is the mother daughter connection that fuels the film and makes one really see a human feeling for the beast that everyone has always feared.

Elle Fanning, the young actress who has grown up in front of our eyes as Aurora in the first Maleficent continues to amaze us with her charm and kindness as she never changes even when she goes to the humans after the proposal, she still fights for what is good especially when she realizes that Maleficent was set up to be the villain by the most unlikeliest person.

Joining the cast in this sequel is Michelle Pfeiffer portraying Queen Ingrid and equally setting the stage for a betrayal in the process. Similar to other roles that she’s had in the past, Pfeiffer is no different as she knows how to play good when she has a secret that she is hiding and one doesn’t realize until it is almost too late that the real villain isn’t the one with horns at all.

Finally, Chiwetel Ejiofor also joins the cast as a hidden leader of the Moors, set on reuniting Maleficent with her own kind in order to finally overtake the ruthless humans who are raging war on the peaceful land.

With all this going on, who will succeed and will Maleficent prove to be a villain after all or will a new villain emerge in her place?

The fairy tale based film came out October 18th and dropped to number 2 at the box office in its second week as Joker barely pushed past to number one bringing its domestic total to 65 million. The film is currently playing in a theater near you.
