“Mafia Mamma” Review

After watching her son go off to college and her husband cheat on her, Donna is ready for a change. When she unexpectedly gets a phone call from a mysterious woman regarding her long lost grandfather in Italy, she hops on the first plane for once in her life. What she doesn’t realize is that decision will have deadly consequences as she quickly finds herself in charge of the mafia. The only question is will she decide to stay or run home to the boring life she came from.

Mafia Mamma stars Nightmare Alley‘s Toni Collette in a role that truly takes her further out of her comfort zone as she finds a unique way of capturing the emotion of a woman who when it comes down to importance, just wants to make peace and protect her family. Additionally, the film stars MatrixMonica Bellucci as the secretary to the family mafia who aids in both bringing Donna to Italy and helping her adjust to her new life as the mafia boss. All in all, the dynamic between just these two women is enough to have audiences wondering what will happen next. Add the rest of the stellar cast and you are sure to have a unique mobster movie that resembles a female version of the Godfather with a little comedy to lighten the mood when needed.

Mafia Mamma came out in theaters April 14 and is a movie for one who thrives in the mob genre. It carries similar flair while holding its own in its sudden uniqueness to create a new story line. It’s currently playing in a theater near you, though one word of warning, it is rated R as it does have a few graphic moments of violence, language and some sexual scenes as well. That being said, if you are willing to take a chance, you shouldn’t be disappointed with the outcome.
