After over 35 years, the space ranger toy is finally getting his movie. That movie is Lightyear and it definitely is one of epic proportions, though one might argue if the new story seems a bit rushed.
That being said, Lightyear does do a fair job of exploring questions that Toy Story never fully uncovered as we get to see Captain America‘s Chris Evans assume the iconic role that Tim Allen made famous back in 1995. All in all Evans doesn’t disappoint as he clearly captures iconic lines as well as adding a bit of his own personal charm to the character.
He also develops a unique relationship with co-actor Kiki Palmer who voices the granddaughter of his original partner when he finally “completes” his mission. Palmer, additionally adds her own quirky charm as she shows the energetic twenty some girl with dreams of living out her dreams of traveling space.
The film also explores the concept of time traveling as it takes different elements from another movie (Back To The Future) and challenges the laws of time traveling with the concept of reaching levels of light speed in space. Through this unique concept we see a young Buzz Lightyear going through time in periods of 4 years as he tries to complete his mission.
There are also a few heartfelt moments when one might tear up especially when his original partner passes away while Buzz is in space. That being said, Lightyear is definitely worth seeing as kids will enjoy seeing the adventures of their favorite space ranger. Adults should also enjoy the nostalgia as long as one doesn’t think too much as to the past and just enjoy the new movie as a new adventure.
That being said, Lightyear came out in theaters Father’s Day weekend and is a sure movie to see with the whole family.
