“Lee” MOVIE REVIEW

We don’t hire older models.
– I’m not a model anymore. I’d rather take a picture than be one.

After years of being on the cover of acclaimed magazine, Lee Miller does the impossible and becomes one of the first and greatest acclaimed photojournalists. What’s more is she makes the choice to go into war and capture some of the harshest and most powerful photos of women in WWII. The only problem was getting Vogue Magazine to publish them for fear of offending and horrifying the public.

The historical film, Lee does all of this and more as it captures the essence of a great photojournalist. Kate Winslet ultimately does and exceptional job of portraying that. One would be warned there is a bit of full frontal nudity, similar to a younger role when she starred in Titanic. If you look past that, Winslet has a way of getting what she wants for better or worse as any good war correspondent aims for. She does it and more in this nearly 2 hour film.

Similarly, the film also stars Andy Samburg, who portrays Lee’s lover and Alexander Skarsgard as Lee’s counterpart who follows her into war. Both Samburg and Skargard add just enough tension to what many war correspondents like Lee go through in balancing work life with that of the home. Being set in WWII era, it’s even more challenging as women aren’t naturally seen in that light.

All in all, Lee is a movie for all who long to know history as it’s a lesson to all of us. Don’t be afraid to show the truth. Truth may not be beautiful all the time, but it’s important to know what is going on and Lee Miller is a powerful example of that fearlessness for the story.

Lee came out in theaters September 28th and is currently playing in one near you.
