“Last Goal Wins” REVIEW

It’s the unbelievable underdog story of an American Samoa soccer team with the worst possible odds, that ends up taking the title nearly a decade after their worst game in the world cup.

Next Goal Wins stars and directed by Reservation Dog’s Taiki Waititi, he shows the power of faith and determination that fuels these underdogs to that championship. Additionally with the help of American coach, Thomas (Michael Fassbender) though it’s clear he only took the job for one reason, but that reason turns into more of a love hate as he tries desperately to mold these young boys into the stars that they can be. Fassbender does a good job in portraying that kind of emotion that clearly the original Thomas had to have felt, especially being away from his family on an all new island.

Finally the real stars are the cast of young individuals to play this struggling team, including one of the first nonbinary actresses (Kaimana) to play the first nonbinary soccer member from American Samoa. Kaimana does an exceptional job, especially along side her male counterparts. She really holds her own while defining exactly who she is.

All in all, Next Goal Wins has comedy combined with some serious heartfelt moments that will have you rooting for the team even when you think it is hopeless. It’s a film for any soccer fan as well as anyone who loves a good underdog story.

Next Goal Wins came out in theaters November 17 and is currently playing in a theater near you.
