"Knives Out" Review

What happened to Harlan Thrombey? That’s the question on everyone’s mind when rich mystery writer commits suicide for no apparent reason. It’s enough of a mystery to hire P.I detective, Benoit Blanc to find out the truth while the family has it’s own secrets surrounding the mysterious revelation of who is to inherit all that money.

The thing is its not who one would think it is as a family nurse suddenly finds herself in a sticky situation with a dark secret of her own as she also discovers that Harlan has named her as sole heir to the Thrombey family house and business. But will that secret that she knows be enough to take the inheritance away or is there a bigger secret that not even she knows about.

At 2 hour 10 minute runtime, Knives Out is a modern day version of the board game Clue, where every member of the family has a secret as to the real reason Harlan is dead. It’s up to the PI to discover who’s telling the truth and who’s just covering up for someone else.

The film stars Daniel Craig, in his latest movie not related to the 007 franchise and one would say he does a good job in taking on more of a detective role as opposed to his former British intelligence roles. Additionally he does a great job in working with the young girl who plays Marta, the nurse who finds herself as heiress. The chemistry between the two, Craig and relative newcomer Ana de Armas is spot on. Even when Armas is running scared and trying to figure out whether to keep the inheritance or give it back to the greedy family which seeks to take it from her. There’s a special bond that assures her that everything is going to be ok.

Other actors include Christopher Plummer as Harlan, who instantly captures the role of giving grandfather who wants to take care of the nurse who took care of him. Also Chris Evans plays a very different character from his Captain America days, though his smug nature instantly captivates us into wondering what he really did and if he can in fact be trust.

All together, Knives out will have audiences second guessing what everyone says and does and the result will have audiences saying “did that really just happen?”

The suspense film came out in theaters November 27 with a 8 million total for its first day at the box office. It’s currently playing at a theater near you.
