Helen Mirren shines as the iconic Golda Meir. As one of the most influence women of the 20th century, Mirren undoubtably conveyed that same influence. One thing about Mirren, she definitely has a certain knack for period pieces. She ultimately leaves nothing on the line and fully portrays the characters with her own sense of flair.
Ultimately the film tells the story of Golda, as Israel’s first prime minister, during the Yom Kippur war. Like Oppenheimer, which came out the beginning of the summer, Golda is interrogated for her involvement in the war and nearly held responsible for the thousands of deaths. However unlike Oppenheimer, this film is half the length, which is adequate for the type of film. That being said, it does keep the attention of the audience as it jumps from her in the room to key scenes thoughout the war, where she ultimately had to make tough decisions.
Aside from Mirren, the film also stars Spotlight‘s Liev Schreiber, as the secretary of state toward the end when Golda is faced with surrendering without a peace treaty. Schreiber, like Mirren, also has his own sense of style, where he ultimately shines in his government role.
Golda Meir has powerful icon as she is ultimately had another movie by the same name come out in 2019, however the two movies are completely different. The 2019 was done more as a documentary style film, where this latest one highlights specifically her involvement in the Yom Kipper War.
That being said, Golda came out in theaters August 25 and is currently playing in one near you.
