“Ghostbuster- Afterlife” REVIEW

Nothing ever happens in Summerville except for the daily earthquakes. When Calle and her two kids show up to clean through her father’s run down house, things really begin to become paranormal. That is when Calle’s daughter, Phoebe soon discovers there is more that her “grandfather” left than just a rundown house. Connections to the original Ghostbusters lead Phoebe to a discover as Gooser who nearly destroyed New York City is back for vengeance. The question is will she and her friends be able to stop it.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife shows a new age in Ghostbusting through the eyes of those left behind but it doesn’t stop there as it pays homage to the original four that started it all. There are cameos by all of the original including archival footage of the late Harold Ramis, who passed away in 2014. There is even a shot of all four original Ghostbusters in the finale as they assist the new generation to take down the original Gozer.

The new generation of Ghostbusters stars “Gifted’sMcKenna Grace who seems to be following in her grandfather’s scientific role. This is far different than any other role we’ve seen Grace in as it shows her with the power to figure things out and put things together. It definitely makes sense which Ghostbuster is her grandfather as she begins to find shocking comparisons, including the fire pole in the middle of the house that leads to Egon’s laboratory with all the ghostbuster gear.

“IT’s” Finn Wolfhard plays Phoebe’s brother, who finds the iconic ECO-1 as he figures out how to fix it up and use it to practice driving . The sibling chemistry between Grace and Wolfhard similarly also resembles that of the “brotherly” bond between Ray, Egon and Venkman. One could also say they gave both kids the same qualities of the original, including Wolfhard’s pursuit of the cute girl in town like Venkman as well as Grace’s attempt at humor which is iconic of Ray.

Finally “The Post’s” Carrie Coon stars as the mysterious “daughter” of Egon and the children’s mother. Ultimately she carries herself with the same firmness as past films, which is trying to hold strong when things seem to be failing. There is also a heartfelt moment toward the end when she realizes her father (Egon) was watching her all the time, which is closed with a paranormal embrace that is too good not to see.

Overall this sequel of Ghostbusters is well worth the wait for true fans. It connects to the original in a much deeper role and pays homage to the great actor who started it all. Ghostbuster’s Afterlife came out in theaters November 19 and is currently playing in one near you.
