“Eternals” REVIEW

New superheroes have emerged, though they’ve been here on Earth for thousands of years. These superheroes have a more spiritual sense as they have only been instructed to fight when “deviants” are present. It is now up to them to save the world when deviants emerge from the ice and seek to destroy the world. However they soon learn the secret to why they were really sent to the Earth as the plan to wipe out the planet and start a new leaves the heroes turn with who they really should be saving.

At over 2 and a half hour run time, Eternals is your typical superhero action movie. There is a lot of action though one might say it is also filled with exposition that may or may not be needed. There is also a lot of time jumping as we go back and forth from the past to the present to look at where and when each Eternal has spent their lives while trying to hide the fact that they do not age.

That being said, there are a lot of references to the Original Avengers including and end scene with Dr. Strange’s voice talking to Dane who stops him as he pulls an ancient sword out of the box as we as various times throughout when the Avengers are brought up casually. It only leaves us to wonder how Marvel will be connecting these two powerful movies.

Eternals stars a powerhouse cast all under the direction of award winning director Chloe Zhao. Coming off her first win as director of Nomadland, Zhao does an intriguing effort in the Marvel box office hit. There are moments where one could say, wow, did that really happen.

Similarly the film stars “Crazy Rich Asian” Gemma Chan as Sersi and “Game of Thrones” Richard Madden as Ikaris. The two ex lovers now fighting for leading the Eternals after Ajak (Salma Hayek) is killed by a deviant. The thing is both have their own motives as the truth about the end of the world makes them second guess their mission.

Other stars include Angelina Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lia McHugh as Sprite and Lauren Ridloff as Makkari. All have their own unique story and strengths that toward the end of the film help in the ultimate cause to save the World in a unifying way.

Eternals came out in theaters November 5 and for any Marvel lover it is highly recommended. Only one word of caution, do not go to the movie tired as it may be difficult to stay with the story in some places. That being said it is an entertaining story as it causes you to look at the bigger picture in the Marvel Cinematic universe.
