“Death Day” sequel: Review

It’s happened again. Tree Gelbman is stuck in another loop where she is reliving her birthday over and over, always the same outcome though, that is dying at the end of the day by the killer in the Baby Face. There’s one catch though, this time she is in an alternate universe where her mom and best friend is alive and her boyfriend is now with her best friend.

This is due to a machine, created by classmate, Ryan Phan and his scientists friends, which she must attempt to help them find the right sequence in order to stop the loop and either return to her own universe or choose the alternative.

Now Tree is faced with the ultimate test of love and that is who does she let go of forever, her mom who suddenly came back to life or her boyfriend who she wishes to start a new life with.

At an hour and forty minutes runtime, Happy Death Day 2U, brings back the same cast in a similar storyline with a few key changes and Jessica Rothe as Tree continues to carry the story with her witty humor and expressions that will have the audience laughing rather than terrified for their lives.

Produced by Blumhouse productions and director, Christopher Landon this time teamed up with the Scott Lobdell who wrote the original Happy Death Day solo and one could definitely see the difference. From the start, the writing definitely had a much crisper storyline as it quickly delved into an all new time loop that seemed to be started by the scientist Ryan through the use of his machine. More meat in the dialogue, allowed the audience to really get involved emotionally in our characters and at points in the movie actually found themselves asking, “Just how much more can Tree take as she continuously found new and interesting ways of killing herself before Baby Face did.

Overall, Happy Death Day 2U is an instant horror comedy that will surprise you in new and interesting ways even as to who is actually behind the baby mask, how does Tree kill him and the all important question, who does she choose, her mom or her man?

The film came out in theaters Valentines day 2019 and is currently playing in a theater near you. See it, you won’t want to miss the next phase of Baby Face. It’s a great film especially if one likes a little humor to go with the horror.
