“Black Widow” Review

Long before Natasha Romanoff became part of the Avengers family, she had another family. It was one that she believed to be real until she and her sister were stolen and separated by Russian spies with the number one goal, create “killers” known as “widows”. Years go by and Natasha thinks her sister, Yelena is a thing of the past. While chasing a threat, she comes face to face with grown up Yelena who is harboring a grudge. Eventually they realize it wasn’t either sisters fault as the truth about their real family is revealed. Now it’s up to the two widows to join forces along side their fictious parents Melina and Red Guardian to save the world.

Marvel’s Black Widow eloquently captures the story of Natasha’s past in a way that makes you completely understand her lack of a deep romantic connection with anyone. That being said, Black Widow is truly one for the women’s movement as the two lead actresses, Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh carry the heart of the story. The casting choice for Florence Pugh is spot on as she definitely shows an uncanny knack for being able to handle a punch. Of Course she is no stranger to punches as her previous film “Fighting with my Family” is an excellent example of of kin acting abilities.

The film also stars yet another strong female actress as Rachel Weisz plays the girl’s mother figure, Melina. Similarly the casting choice is spot on as she is an actress who can definitely keep a secret and still show compassion to those that need it. Similarly she can also pack a punch and is no stranger as her film credentials include many action packed movies.

At 2 hour and 14 minute runtime, Black Widow is a perfect edition to the Avengers franchise. It hold the same action, adventure and yes even a bit of witty banter which will have audiences enthralled and engrossed in the latest blockbuster of the summer. As far as timeline goes, Black Widow said to be set Between Infinity War and End game though the end post credits scene does show a grief stricken Zelina vowing revenge against Hawkeye for her sister’s death.

That being said, it definitely introduces a potential new hero and will be interesting to see what is to come in future Avengers films. Black Widow came out in theaters July 8, 2021 and is currently playing in one near you. One can also stream for 30 dollars exclusively on Disney Plus with an active subscription.
