Focus Features’ musical biopic about English singer, Amy Winehouse is bringing a few faithful followers to the theaters this weekend. The story follows the life of Winehouse through adolescent as she faces family and relationship issues which ultimate end in a serious drug addiction which took her life in 2011.
The film as a whole does an exceptional job of capturing that, specifically through the acting of Marisa Abela who did an amazing job of portraying Winehouse. From the emotional expressions to the dynamic singing voice that captures some of Winehouse’s most notable songs that inevitably took home 6 Grammys, Abela also had a cunning way of engaging with the other actors including Unbroken’s Jack O’Connell who portrayed Winehouse husband, Blake.
All in all, Back to Black will have audiences glued to the screen just to relive some of the harshest things that Winehouse had to endure, even after she got clean. It will make one fully understand the lyrics and emotions behind her greatest hits. That being said, a word of caution as the film does contain an R rating. There is some adult language, drug content and full nudity which may not be good for young audiences. It is quite raw uncensored view into someone that fans truly would admire.
Back To Black came out in theaters May 17 and is currently playing in one near you. See it before it’s too late.
