There’s a new hero on the block as DC’s Aquaman is bringing moviegoers to the theaters for the second weekend in a row with a overall total of 188 million domestically at the box office.
The action film stars Jason Momoa reprising his role as Arthur Curry (a.k.a. Aquaman) as this film explores the origins of the mysterious man of the land and the sea on his journey to reclaim his title of king. Overall, the film does an exceptional job of capturing the story based on the comic book, in such a way that from the start audiences are enthralled into the adventure.
The film also reveals the forbidden love between Arthur’s parents, the Queen of Atlantis (Nicole Kidman) and a lighthouse owner (Temuera Morrison) as the film opens with Morrison’s character finding a mysterious woman (Kidman) unconscious on his dock. A love grows between the two as she gives birth to Arthur only a few years later to be hunted by the king of Atlantis who is determined to have his betrothed returned to him safely.
As Arthur grows up, he is disturbed by the disappearance of his mother, but also quickly discovers his connection to the sea as a visit to the aquarium introduces the idea of being able to communicate with the sea life as well as his ability to breath under water.
Quickly he learns that his half brother, determined to seek revenge on the land, has a plot to threaten those he loves. Now through the encouragement of the new betrothed Princess Mera (Amber Heard) who convinces Arthur that only the “true king” will be able to find the legendary triton of King Atlan. The question is will he be able to find it and take his rightful place against his younger half brother (William Defoe)?
At 2 hour 23 minute runtime, Aquaman is an instant hit for any DC fan as it brings light to a character that we saw in last year’s Justice League as well and Superman v Batman. It’ll have audiences on the edge of their seats raveling in the action of the land and the sea. The film came out on Christmas day and is currently playing in a theater near you.
