Ani has never been in a long lasting relationship. With a career as a sex worker, it makes it hard to settle down. Then she meets Ivan a 21 year old boy who seems drawn to her in more ways then one, but is it enough to make a marriage that will last or it is all an allusion that can be destroyed by a controlling family?
Anora is a comedy romance with unique story, though one might wonder is the story enough to hold on to? It starts out strong but then gets a little weak when the family gets involved. It ultimately leaves the audience wanting more and frustrated with the ending.
That being said, the film does star a cast that does everything short of making the story believable. Scream’s Mikey Madison as Ani does an exceptional job of bringing the audience into that life of sex workers as she strives for something more. Equally, Mark Eidelshtein as Ivan, the young boy with a unique sense of entitlement with no idea of responsibility. He embodies that mentality from the first time he meets Ani to when he runs away like a scared puppy with his tail between his legs.
All in all, Anora is definitely a film to see at least once. It contains a unique romance story, though because of the nature of the film, it may not be for everyone. The film is rated, R for violence, nudity and full sexual gestures that may not be for the young at heart.
Anora came out in theaters, October 18th and is currently playing in one near you.
