“American Underdog” Review

“Destiny belongs to the underdog”.

From a little boy’s dreams to a young man who held out hope even when the world seemed against him for the NFL draft, Kurt Warner proved that nothing is impossible. The remarkable true story of NFL MVP, Kurt Warner is bringing audiences to the theater this Christmas as it sends the ultimate message of hope.

American Underdog stars Shazam‘s Zachary Levi in what is sure to be his most emotionally driven role yet. Levi captures the drive and determination of any young man, as well as the romantic flare as he meets and falls for his soon to be wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin) and her two young children.

Similarly Paquin has come along ways from her X-men days as this role, she embraces a strong willed and yet faith driven one that will have you routing for the known chemistry between her and Levi. Paquin also for first time has to take on the role of mother to a physically challenged little boy as the connection is enough to send tears to your eyes at first glance.

Lastly, Dennis Quaid joins at the climax of the film as the middle aged coach who has a relative similarity to Warner who like him took a break to do life and stepped into the role of coaching along side his collegiate, who is half his age.

American Underdog is certainly a film for the whole family as kids will enjoy the two young children who warm their way into Kurt’s hurt. There is also the romantic aspect as one sees the journey that Kurt detours down in an effort to win Brenda’s heart and mind after Brenda loses hope in love due to her messy divorce. It is the relationship between the two of them that holds strong when all else seems hopeless and Kurt goes from stocking shelf at a local grocery store to eventually playing arena football which ultimately gives him his second chance at the NFL.

American Underdog came out in theaters Christmas day and is a film that is sure to leave audiences feeling good as they walk out of the theater. See in one near you.
