“47 Meters Down” Sequel Review

It’s still not safe to go back in the water as the latest shark encounter movie has audiences jumping at the sight of the killer shark who is terrorizing a hidden underground city off the coast of Mexico. In the highly anticipated sequel, this time the girls are “uncaged” as 4 teens decide to go cave diving as they decide to go for a swim in an ancient Incan cave, however things go wrong as the cave collapses with a shark or two inside. Will the girls be able to escape or will they become shark bait?

At an hour thirty minutes, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged contains exceptional filming and graphics that will even leave the hardest of critics reaching for their seats wondering when the shark is going to strike next.

The film stars, John Corbett, as Grant, archeologist who has discovered the cave and with it the dangers inside. In addition to the sharks, Grant also has two teenage daughters of whom are trying to adjust to the newness of sisterhood as well as adjusting to life in a new high school, of which Mia, played by Sophie Nelisse, is having the hardest time as new girls in high school typically do. Ultimately Nelisse did a great job of capturing the essence of Mia as a girl driven to the sea, though its been a while since she’d scuba dived. The young actress used the elements of scuba diving to steer the other girls in the right direction when things get challenging.

In addition, the movie also touches on the quick bonding of Mia and her new sister, Sasha (Corrine Foxx) as in the opening of the film , one sees a instant disconnect with Sasha not wanting to have anything to do with Mia. That all changes when their dad arranges a surprise trip on a glass bottom boat, which ends up with them going cave diving instead. It’s a classic tale of what happens when people are forced to depend on each other in a survival of the fittest, but the question is will the two be able to form a deep enough connection to survive to the end.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged came out in theaters August 16, 2019 and is currently playing in one near you. See it today.
